Little Women [ePub]

by Deanna McFadden

Little Women: Retold is a kid-friendly version of the Louisa May Alcott classic that I love. I like the idea of being able to use this version with younger kids, because many of the characters are kids themselves. Set during the American Civil War, the story is about the four March sisters, and their mother watching them grow up and chase their dreams. It shows the sisters growing, sacrificing, working, fighting, making up, loving, and maturing even through the tough time they are in where their father is away fighting in the war. It touches on many values, and is a much more concise and appropriate version for school children.

This book is a piece of historical fiction because it has fictional characters living in a time that is historically accurate.

This story lends itself well to the use of character mapping in the classroom, as well as for activities for analyzing cause and effect in a story line.

This book is best suited for 4th-6th graders.
