Great Short Stories of the World [ePub]

by Barrett Harper Clark

A very thorough collection, but tastes have changed considerably since 1925 and many of these stories have not endured the test of time. So, while there are some undeniably great tales ('The Forty-Seven Ronin', Alarcón's 'The Tall Woman', Turgenev's 'The District Doctor', James's 'The Story in It'), many others (Gellert's 'The Sick Wife', Keller's 'A Legend of the Dance', Darío's 'The Deaf Satyr') may safely be consigned to the drivel bin. By and large, the editors favored the overly sentimental, the neoclassical, the parable-like—causing them to make the mistake of excluding important contemporary authors like Wharton and Joyce. Two and a half stars.
