What Was Freedom's Price? [ePub]

by Willie Lee Rose

Certainly worth a read, especially if your focus/interest is Reconstruction/Emancipation. While some of the essays are broadly comparative between different regions/nations, collectively, I don't feel they come anywhere near the depth or detail of Foner's work "Nothing But Freedom". This doesn't mean they weren't insightful and thought provoking, however.

Ransom and Sutch's essay on Sharecropping was particularly informative and probably the highlight for me. Woodward's piece was stellar (as usual)- the last paragraph of which still continues to hang around in my mind, particularly when I teach Reconstruction.
