Parties and Democracy in Italy [ePub]

by James L. Newell

Since the end of the Cold War, Italian party politics have undergone a transformation and the purpose of this book is to analyse its causes and consequences. This book explains the transformation in terms of three sets of factors operating within the parties among their members, below the parties at the level of the mass electorate and above the parties at the level of institutions. It then looks at the impact of the transformation on institutions, on public policy and on relations between parties and voters. The book thus fills an important gap in the literature on recent political change in Italy - thereby providing a much needed guide both to the dynamics of the change itself, and to its significance for the quality of Italian democracy as a whole.
